Chart Symbols
Every mark on a nautical chart is a sentence in a compact visual language. These are the symbols small-craft skippers meet most, redrawn clean — each with its official Chart No. 1 reference.
How Chart No. 1 organizes symbols
U.S. Chart No. 1 is the official, public-domain dictionary of every symbol, abbreviation, and term on NOAA charts. It files symbols under lettered sections, so a reference like K 12 means entry 12 in section K (rocks, wrecks, obstructions). The badge on each card below is that reference — look it up in the book to see the official rendering.

Depths & contours
5 symbolsHow the chart writes depth: soundings, drying heights, and contour lines (section I).
Sounding (charted depth)
A number printed on the water area is a sounding: the depth below chart datum. A small subscript digit is a decimal — 3₅ means 3.5. Upright figures are in true, surveyed position.
Why it matters ›Why it matters ˅
Always check the chart title block for the unit (meters, feet, or fathoms) before trusting any sounding — the same '3' can mean 3 m or 3 ft. Chart datum is a low-water level, so the real depth is usually more, never rely on less.
Drying height
A sounding-style figure with a line underneath is a drying height: the spot is above chart datum and uncovers at low water. 2₄ underlined means it dries 2.4 units above datum.

Drying areas are usually tinted green. At high water there may be plenty of depth here; near low water it is dry land. The underline is the giveaway that the number means height, not depth.
Depth contour
Depth contours join soundings of equal depth (2, 5, 10, 20 m…), with the value set into a break in the line. The zero contour is the low-water line at chart datum.

Contours give the shape of the bottom at a glance. Many skippers pick a 'safety contour' (say 5 m) and treat everything inshore of it as out of bounds — a simple, powerful passage-planning habit.
Approximate depth contour
A depth contour drawn as a dashed line is approximate: the surveys in that area were too sparse or too old for the line to be charted firmly.

Treat dashed contours with extra margin — the bottom between old survey lines can hold surprises. The source diagram on the chart shows how well each area was surveyed.
Dredged channel / area
Dashed lines mark the limits of a dredged channel or basin, with a legend such as '7.3 m' (sometimes with the word 'maintained' or the year of the latest survey) giving its controlling depth.

If the legend shows a survey year rather than 'maintained', silting may have reduced the depth since. Big ships need the whole dredged depth — small craft should stay clear of their track anyway.
Dangers
14 symbolsRocks, wrecks, obstructions, and rough water (sections K, J, H).
Rock which covers and uncovers
The six-armed asterisk is a rock that covers and uncovers with the tide. Where known, its drying height above chart datum is shown beside it, underlined — here 1₂ (1.2 units).
Why it matters ›Why it matters ˅
Visible at low water, invisible and just awash near high water — the most treacherous state. Give charted asterisks a wide berth whenever the tide is above the rock's drying height.
Rock awash at chart datum
A cross (+) with four dots, one in each angle, marks a rock whose top is right at chart datum: it is awash — waves breaking over it — at the lowest tides.
Why it matters ›Why it matters ˅
At almost any state of tide this rock is hidden just below the surface. It rarely shows enough to be seen, which is exactly why it gets its own symbol.
Dangerous underwater rock, depth unknown
A simple cross (+) is an underwater rock of unknown or uncertain depth. The dotted line around it is the danger circle, drawn around isolated hazards dangerous to surface navigation.

'Depth unknown' means nobody has measured how little water is over it — assume the worst. The dotted danger circle is the chart's way of saying: keep outside this line.
Sunken rock with known depth
When a rock's least depth has been measured, the sounding is printed on the rock itself — here 4₆ (4.6 units). A dotted danger circle is added where it endangers surface navigation.

Unlike an ordinary sounding, this depth belongs to a pinnacle — the bottom around it may be far deeper, so it will not show on your depth sounder until you are on top of it.
Wreck showing hull (stranded wreck)
A solid ship silhouette marks a wreck showing any portion of hull or superstructure at the level of chart datum — a stranded wreck you may actually see.

Visible wrecks are easy to avoid by eye in daylight — but remember debris often extends underwater well beyond what shows.
Wreck, masts only visible
Charted where only the mast(s) of a wreck are visible at chart datum, usually with a legend such as 'Masts'. The hull lies unseen beneath.

The visible masts mark the spot but not the extent — the hull, rigging, and debris spread around them. Pass well clear rather than steering close to 'have a look'.
Dangerous wreck, depth unknown
A horizontal 'keel' line crossed by three strokes (the middle one longest) is a sunken wreck. Enclosed in a dotted danger circle, its least depth is unknown but it is considered potentially dangerous to surface vessels.

This is the wreck symbol to fear: nobody knows how close it comes to the surface. It is often screened in blue as an extra warning. Never anchor near it either — ground tackle loves old wrecks.
Non-dangerous wreck
The hull-and-ribs wreck symbol without a danger circle marks a wreck whose depth is unknown but which is considered deep enough not to endanger surface vessels (typically deeper than about 20 m).

'Non-dangerous' applies to surface navigation only — it still matters to anyone anchoring, trawling, or diving. The presence or absence of the dotted circle is the whole difference from K 28.
Obstruction (Obstn)
The abbreviation 'Obstn' inside a dotted danger circle marks an obstruction, depth unknown: something man-made or unidentified on the bottom that endangers navigation.

An obstruction could be anything — a lost container, pilings, machinery. With no depth given, treat it exactly like an unknown rock and stay outside the dotted line.
Foul ground
The '#' symbol (often with the legend 'Foul') marks foul ground: remains of a wreck or other debris, not dangerous to vessels passing over, but to be avoided when anchoring, trawling, or grounding.

Foul ground is the classic anchor-eater. There is enough water to sail across it — just never put gear on the bottom there.
Breakers
Small wave-curl marks (sometimes abbreviated 'Br') show where the sea breaks over a shoal, bar, or reef even in moderate weather.

Breakers visible from seaward are nature's own danger buoyage. Charted breakers over a bar can make an otherwise navigable entrance impassable in onshore swell — time such entrances carefully.
Kelp
Wavy tuft symbols mark patches of kelp or heavy weed on or near the surface.
Why it matters ›Why it matters ˅
Kelp needs rock to anchor to, so charted kelp is a strong hint of foul, rocky bottom close below. It also fouls propellers and drags anchors — treat kelp patches as hazards, not scenery.
Overfalls, tide rips, races
Clusters of short, wavy vertical strokes mark overfalls, tide rips, and races: standing, breaking water raised where fast tidal streams run over uneven bottom or against wind and other streams. (Curved arrows nearby, H 45, chart eddies.)

The water here can be violent in an otherwise calm sea, and worst at spring tides with wind against tide. Small craft plan to pass races at slack water or give them miles of clearance.
Fish haven (artificial reef)
A dashed limit with the legend 'Fish Haven' encloses an artificial reef built to attract fish — sunken rubble, concrete, or hulks. A figure such as '(auth min 12 ft)' gives the authorized minimum depth over it.

The 'authorized' depth is a permit condition, not a survey — material may stand higher. Avoid anchoring or passing closely over fish havens in shallow water.
Seabed
5 symbolsBottom-nature letters that tell you where an anchor will hold (section J).
S — Sand
An italic 'S' printed on the water area gives the nature of the seabed there: sand. Lower-case prefixes qualify it — 'fS' fine sand, 'cS' coarse sand.

Sand is usually good anchor holding once the hook digs in. Bottom-nature letters cluster around designated and popular anchorages for exactly this reason.
M — Mud
An italic 'M' on the water area marks a mud seabed. Qualifier prefixes refine it: 'soM' soft mud, 'sfM' stiff mud.

Mud gives excellent holding for most anchor types, though very soft mud may let a light anchor drag. Expect a dirty foredeck when you weigh.
R — Rock, rocky
An italic 'R' (or 'rky' for rocky) marks a rock seabed: hard bottom with little or no sediment cover.

On rock an anchor either skates or jams — neither is good. If you must anchor, use a trip line so you can pull the anchor out backwards when it snags.
Co — Coral
The italic abbreviation 'Co' marks a seabed of coral or coralline algae.
Why it matters ›Why it matters ˅
Coral is razor-sharp (it chafes through nylon rode fast), snags chain, and is a protected living habitat in many places — anchoring on it is often illegal as well as unwise. Find sand nearby instead.
Sh — Shells
The italic abbreviation 'Sh' marks a seabed of shells (skeletal remains), frequently charted in combinations such as 'S.Sh' — sand and shells.

Loose shell layers can prevent an anchor digging into the firmer material beneath. Combinations tell the real story: 'M.Sh' holds far better than plain 'Sh'.
Lights
4 symbolsLight stars, magenta flares, sectors, and leading lines (section P).
Major light (lighthouse)
A black star with a magenta 'flare' teardrop marks a major light — a lighthouse or primary coastal light. The label beside it (e.g. 'Fl(2) 10s 35m 20M') gives rhythm, period, height, and range.

Magenta is the chart's color for lit aids: wherever you see the flare, the mark works at night. Decode the characteristic label with the Light Characteristics topic — it is the light's fingerprint.
Minor light
A small position circle with a magenta flare marks a minor light: breakwater, pier-head, and channel lights without a major structure. The flare points away from the exact position circle.

The circle, not the flare, is the light's true position — measure from the circle. Minor lights have shorter ranges, so do not expect to raise them far offshore.
Sector light
Dashed radial lines from a light show its sector limits; arcs between them are lettered with the color shown in each direction (R, W, G). From your boat you see one color at a time.

Red sectors usually cover dangers: if a sector light turns from white to red, you have crossed into hazardous water — alter course until it shows white again. The sector limits are bearings toward the light, as seen from seaward.
Leading lights (range)
Two lights (front lower, rear higher) mark a leading line or range. The solid part of the charted line is the track to follow; it continues dashed where it is only a construction line. A bearing such as '270.5°' is printed along it.

When the two lights appear one above the other you are exactly on the safe track — if the top light slides left, steer left (and vice versa). Ranges are the most precise visual guidance a channel can give.
Buoys & beacons
11 symbolsCharted glyphs for floating and fixed marks (sections Q, S).
Conical buoy (nun)
A triangle sitting on a small position circle is the charted glyph for a conical (nun) buoy. The circle at the base marks the buoy's actual position.
Why it matters ›Why it matters ˅
Shape is a navigation signal in itself: cones/nuns are 'pointed' marks (red, starboard-hand in US IALA B waters; green starboard-hand in Region A). Color letters beside the glyph (R, G, Y) confirm it.
Can buoy (cylindrical)
A rectangular glyph on a position circle is a can (cylindrical) buoy — flat-topped in real life.

In US (IALA B) waters cans are green port-hand marks ('leave green cans to port returning'); in Region A cans are red port-hand marks. The charted shape plus the color letter tells you which side to pass.

Spheres never mark a side of the channel: the safe-water (fairway) mark is spherical or carries a red sphere topmark, meaning navigable water all around.
Pillar buoy
A wide base carrying a tall, narrow tower is a pillar buoy — used where a mark must be seen from far off, such as cardinal marks and landfall buoys.

Because a pillar's shape is neutral, its meaning comes entirely from color, topmark, and light — read those, not the outline.
Spar buoy
A long, narrow triangle leaning from its position circle is a spar (spindle) buoy — a floating pole.

Spars are cheap and ice-resistant, so they are everywhere in small-craft channels. Like pillars, their meaning is carried by color and topmark, not shape.
Mooring buoy
The mooring-buoy glyph (a buoy body with a ring or cross above) marks a permanent mooring laid for ships or small craft.

Heavy ground tackle — chains and sinkers — radiates from a mooring buoy on the bottom, so never anchor close to one. Picking one up uninvited may also earn you a large, fast neighbor.
Beacon (with topmark)
An upright symbol on a base line is a beacon — a mark fixed to the bottom or shore rather than floating. Colors and topmark (cone, can, spheres, X) follow the same IALA system as buoys. 'Bn' may appear beside small symbols.

Beacons do not swing or drag like buoys, so their position is exact — but they stand on the very shoal they mark. Never pass close on the 'wrong' side.
Beacon tower
A small tower pictogram marks a beacon tower: a substantial fixed structure (masonry or lattice), painted and/or carrying a topmark according to its IALA function.

Beacon towers are excellent daytime fixing marks — solid, charted precisely, and visible far off. Many carry lights and appear with a magenta flare at night.
Daybeacon (dayboard)
US charts show daybeacons — piles carrying shaped dayboards — as small triangle or square symbols: triangular boards (red, even numbers) match nuns, square boards (green, odd numbers) match cans.

Dayboards do the work of buoys in shallow US channels like the ICW. Same memory aid applies: red triangles one side, green squares the other — and 'red right returning' in IALA B.
Racon (radar transponder beacon)
A magenta circle around a mark with the legend 'Racon' (plus a Morse letter, e.g. 'Racon (K)') means it carries a radar transponder: triggered by your radar, it paints that Morse letter as a line on your screen radiating from the mark.

Racons make key marks unmistakable on radar in fog or at night — the flash of Morse on the screen begins at (or just beyond) the mark's position. Magenta again signals an electronic/lit aid.
Measured distance (measured mile)
Two pairs of beacons form transits at each end of a measured distance; the chart quotes the distance and the course to steer (e.g. '1852 m 090°–270°'). Run between the transits at steady speed to calibrate your log.

Time the run both ways and average, to cancel the tidal stream. It is one of the few chart features meant for boat testing rather than hazard avoidance.
Areas & limits
10 symbolsBoundaries, zones, cables, pipelines, and routes (sections N, M, L, D).
Anchorage / anchorage area
An anchor symbol marks an anchorage. A dashed limit with anchor symbols (often numbered or named) encloses a designated anchorage area; a bare anchor (N 10) is a reported anchorage without defined limits.

Charted anchorages exist because the holding, depth, and shelter are proven — check the nearby bottom-nature letters and soundings before letting go. In busy ports, some numbered areas are reserved for ships.
Anchoring prohibited
An anchor symbol with a bar struck through it, printed in magenta, marks an area where anchoring is prohibited.

These areas usually protect submarine cables, pipelines, or fairways. Anchoring there risks your gear, the infrastructure, and a hefty fine — check what the zone protects before even a 'quick stop'.
Restricted / prohibited area boundary
A dashed limit whose dashes carry small perpendicular ticks (T-shapes, pointing into the area) bounds a restricted area (N 2.1); the same line screened in magenta bounds an area where entry is prohibited (N 2.2). A legend states the restriction.

Restrictions range from 'no anchoring' to 'no entry at any time' (security zones, firing ranges). The T-ticks point into the restricted side — read the legend before assuming you may cross.
Traffic separation scheme (TSS)
Broad magenta outline arrows show the established direction of traffic in each lane (M 10); a magenta band or line between them is the separation zone or line (M 12–13) that traffic must keep out of.

COLREGs Rule 10 applies: join and leave at lane ends or shallow angles, cross on a heading at right angles to the flow, and do not impede through traffic. Vessels under 20 m and sailing vessels must not impede power-driven vessels using the lane.
Submarine cable
A continuous wavy magenta line traces a submarine cable (telecom or power). A dashed wavy line with cable symbols bounds a submarine cable area (L 30.2).

Fouling a power cable can be lethal as well as expensive — if your anchor snags near a charted cable, slip and buoy the rode rather than winching up. Anchoring in cable areas is often prohibited outright.
Submarine pipeline
A magenta line of long dashes alternating with dots marks a submarine supply pipeline (oil, gas, chemicals, water). Outfalls and intakes (L 41.1) are charted similarly in black/gray.

Pipelines may stand proud of the bottom, so they can snag gear even in 'deep enough' water. Gas under pressure plus a dragged anchor is a genuinely dangerous combination — give charted pipelines a wide berth when anchoring.
Overhead cable (with clearance)
Pylon symbols joined by a curved magenta line mark an overhead power cable crossing water. The safe vertical clearance (e.g. '22 m') is printed at the crossing, measured above a high-water level.

Compare the clearance with your air draft honestly — and remember high-voltage lines can arc to a mast before contact. Sailboats have been lost to 'plenty of room' guesses; if in doubt, don't pass under.
Ferry route
A dashed magenta line labeled 'Ferry' traces a regular ferry route. A cable ferry (M 51) is labeled 'Cable Ferry' — its submerged cable spans the whole crossing.

Ferries hold schedule, not course-and-speed courtesy — expect them to appear quickly and maneuver late. Never pass between a cable ferry and either shore: the cable rises near the ferry and can catch your keel or prop.
Spoil ground / spoil area
A dashed limit with the legend 'Spoil Ground' or 'Spoil Area' marks a zone where dredged material is deposited. Charted soundings inside are not maintained.

The bottom here changes with every dumping run — a spot charted at 10 m may now be 4 m. Avoid crossing spoil grounds in a deep-draft vessel and never anchor in one.
Offshore platform
A platform symbol with its designation (name/number) marks a fixed offshore structure — production platform, rig, or similar. Many are surrounded by a charted 500 m safety zone (L 3) that vessels must not enter.

Platforms show a white Morse 'U' light (··—, 'you are running into danger') and foghorns. Passing inside the safety zone without business there is an offense in most jurisdictions.
Services & land

Church (conspicuous landmark)
A church pictogram (with variants for tower, spire, and cupola — E 10.2–10.4) marks a church usable as a landmark. Conspicuous landmarks are shown in bold capitals, e.g. 'CH (conspic)', with a position circle at the exact point.
Why it matters ›Why it matters ˅
Spires were the GPS of the age of sail: tall, fixed, and charted to the meter. A bearing on a charted church is still one of the quickest position lines you can take.
Tower
A tapering tower pictogram (abbreviated 'Tr') marks a structure high relative to its base — lookout, water (E 21), or ornamental towers. '(conspic)' flags the outstanding ones.

Any charted tower is a candidate for a compass bearing. Check the abbreviation — a water tower's tank shape looks very different from a lighthouse at distance.
Chimney
A slender stack pictogram, abbreviated 'Chy', marks an industrial chimney. Heights may be charted; conspicuous ones are labeled '(conspic)'.

On flat industrial coasts chimneys out-mark every natural feature — many are lit with red air-obstruction lights at night, but do not confuse those with navigation lights.
Tank
A cylinder pictogram marks storage tanks (fuel, water, gas). Groups are labeled 'Tanks'; silos (E 33) chart similarly but taller.

Tank farms sit beside the very harbors you are entering, and their white or silver paint shows up for miles — a practical daytime steering mark.
Radio / television mast
A guyed lattice mast pictogram marks a telecommunication (radio/TV) mast; a self-supporting one is a telecommunication tower (E 29). Heights are often charted.

Masts several hundred meters tall are visible far beyond the coastline itself. Their red flashing obstruction lights are for aircraft — never plot them as navigation lights.
Marina / yacht harbour
A sailboat glyph marks a boat harbour or marina with small-craft berths; small-craft charts add letters for services (fuel, water, repairs).
Why it matters ›Why it matters ˅
On a rough day this little sailboat is the most welcome symbol on the chart. Check approach depths and the marina's own entry notes — the glyph promises berths, not depth.
