Chart Symbols

The symbols a recreational skipper is most likely to use: hazards, depth, pilotage, anchoring, and small-craft facilities—plus clearly marked regional detail.

How to use this directory

Every card represents one chart mark. The core set is prioritized for recreational boating. INT 1 organizes paper-chart concepts under lettered sections, so K 12 is a rock entry in section K. Geometry and fixed chart-ink colours are matched to the published references where available. The vectors are recreated reference artwork, not licensed Imray production assets: always use the legend and notes printed on your chart.

Depths & contours

How the chart writes depth: soundings, drying heights, and contour lines (section I).

Sounding (charted depth)

A number in the water area is a sounding. A smaller following digit is the decimal: 3₅ means 3.5 in the chart's stated depth unit.

Why it matters

Check the chart's depth unit and datum. A sounding is not a guaranteed minimum: water level can fall below predicted datum, the seabed can change, and surveys have limits.

Drying height

An underlined sounding-style figure marks ground that uncovers. An underlined 2₄ means the feature dries 2.4 units above chart datum.

Why it matters

Add the predicted height of tide and then subtract the drying height to estimate water over the feature, allowing for weather, squat, and uncertainty.

Depth contour

A continuous contour joins positions of equal charted depth. Its value is printed in a break in the line.

Why it matters

Use contours to understand the shape of shoal water, but inspect individual soundings and survey quality too. A contour is not a guaranteed clearance boundary.

Approximate depth contour

A broken line represents an approximate depth contour where the available survey does not justify a precise boundary.

Why it matters

Allow more margin around an approximate contour and inspect the chart's source or survey-quality information before using it for close pilotage.

Dredged channel or area

Dashed limits enclose a dredged channel or basin. A legend may state the dredged or maintained depth and the responsible authority.

Why it matters

Silting can reduce the available depth between surveys. Check current harbour information and Notices to Mariners before relying on the maintained figure.

Unsurveyed or inadequately surveyed area

A broken limit with an 'Unsurveyed', 'Inadequately surveyed', or similar warning identifies water where sparse or old data may not reveal every danger.

Why it matters

Blank water is not evidence of deep water. Allow a much larger safety margin and avoid shortcutting through the area without reliable local information.

Tides & currents

3 symbols

Stream arrows, rates, and tidal diamonds used to plan with moving water (section H).

Flood tidal stream

The feathered arrow points in the direction the water flows on the flood. A nearby rate may be shown in knots.

Why it matters

The printed rate is not constant. Use the tidal-stream table or almanac for the time and tidal range of your passage.

Ebb tidal stream

The plain arrow points in the direction the water flows on the ebb. A nearby rate may be shown in knots.

Why it matters

Flood and ebb can follow different axes near headlands and entrances. Use time-specific stream data rather than treating the arrow as a constant.

Tidal-stream diamond

The letter inside the diamond identifies a row in the chart's tidal-stream table, which gives direction and rate before and after high water at a reference port.

Why it matters

The diamond itself does not show the current. Use the correct reference port, time zone, and spring–neap interpolation.

Dangers

Rocks, wrecks, obstructions, and rough water (sections K, J, H).

Rock which covers and uncovers

The six-armed asterisk marks a rock that covers and uncovers. An underlined figure beside it gives the drying height where known.

Why it matters

The rock can be visible at low water and hidden near high water. Plan clearance from chart scale, tide, sea state, and position accuracy.

Rock awash at chart datum

A small cross with four dots, one in each angle, marks a rock awash at the level of chart datum.

Why it matters

At most higher states of tide the rock is hidden just below the surface. Do not depend on seeing it before taking avoiding action.

Dangerous underwater rock, depth unknown

A cross within a dotted danger surround marks an underwater rock whose least depth is unknown and which may endanger surface navigation.

Why it matters

The dotted surround emphasizes a point hazard; it is not a surveyed exclusion radius. Decide clearance from scale, depths, tide, sea state, and position accuracy.

Sunken rock with known depth

A sounding accompanied by italic R gives the known least depth over a submerged rock. A danger surround is added where appropriate.

Why it matters

Treat the number as a least depth at chart datum, not a passage recommendation. Apply tide, uncertainty, sea state, and under-keel margin.

Wreck showing hull or superstructure

A solid ship-like mark identifies a wreck showing part of its hull or superstructure at chart datum.

Why it matters

Visible structure does not show the full underwater extent of the wreck or its debris. Pass with clearance appropriate to the chart scale.

Wreck with masts visible

Mast or funnel marks identify a wreck whose masts or similar projections are visible at chart datum while the hull remains submerged.

Why it matters

The visible projections mark the location, not the wreck's full extent. Allow for submerged hull, rigging, and debris.

Dangerous wreck

A horizontal wreck line crossed by three ribs and enclosed by a tight dotted surround marks a wreck considered dangerous to surface navigation.

Why it matters

The surround is symbolic rather than a measured keep-out radius. Determine a safe passing distance from chart scale, depths, survey quality, and conditions.

Non-dangerous wreck

The wreck-ribs mark without a dotted danger surround identifies a wreck assessed as not dangerous to ordinary surface navigation at the chart datum and scale.

Why it matters

It is not necessarily deeper than 20 metres and can still endanger anchoring, fishing, diving, or deep-draught craft.

Obstruction (Obstn)

The abbreviation 'Obstn', with a sounding where known and a danger surround where appropriate, marks an underwater obstruction of uncertain or miscellaneous character.

Why it matters

The dotted surround marks the position symbolically rather than defining a safe passing distance. Use the chart scale and all nearby depth information.

Foul ground

Foul ground contains debris or remains that are not charted as a danger to ordinary surface navigation but can foul anchors, fishing gear, or a vessel taking the ground.

Why it matters

Check the surrounding depths before crossing; 'not dangerous to surface navigation' is not a guarantee for every draught or sea condition.

Breakers

Small horizontal wave-crests show where seas commonly break over shallow water or an obstruction.

Why it matters

An entrance that is deep enough in calm water can become unsafe with an onshore swell. Check local bar and harbour guidance.

Overfalls, tide rips, and races

Clusters of horizontal wave strokes identify turbulent water caused by strong streams over uneven bottom or opposing flow.

Why it matters

Conditions can become severe at springs or with wind against tide. Small craft often plan these passages near slack water.

Seabed

5 symbols

Bottom-nature abbreviations that help assess anchoring and seabed hazards (section J).

S — Sand

An italic S printed in the water area records sand at the surveyed seabed position. Qualifiers such as fS or cS may describe fine or coarse sand.

Why it matters

Sand can provide good holding, but holding also depends on layer depth, compaction, slope, anchor type, and conditions.

M — Mud

An italic M printed in the water area records mud at the surveyed seabed position. A qualifier may describe consistency.

Why it matters

Mud can provide good holding, but very soft or shallow mud behaves differently. Consider the complete bottom description and local conditions.

R — Rock

An italic R printed in the water area records rock at the surveyed seabed position.

Why it matters

Rock commonly gives poor or snag-prone anchoring. Use the full chart context and local guidance before choosing the position.

Co — Coral

The italic abbreviation Co records coral at the surveyed seabed position.

Why it matters

Coral can damage ground tackle and may be protected. Avoid anchoring on coral and use designated moorings where provided.

Sh — Shells

The italic abbreviation Sh records shells at the surveyed seabed position.

Why it matters

A shell description alone does not predict holding. Consider whether sand or mud is also charted and assess conditions locally.

Lights

4 symbols

Light stars, magenta flares, sectors, and leading lines (section P).

Major light

A major coastal light is shown by its precise position mark and a magenta light flare. The adjacent characteristic gives rhythm, colour, period, elevation, and range.

Why it matters

Measure from the position mark rather than the flare, and read the complete characteristic instead of inferring range from icon size.

Minor light

A small position circle with a magenta flare marks a minor light such as a pier-head, breakwater, or local channel light.

Why it matters

The position circle—not the flare—gives the charted location. Read the adjacent characteristic for colour, rhythm, and nominal range.

Sector light

Sector-limit lines and colour letters show which light colour is visible from each direction. The bearings and any obscured sectors are part of the charted information.

Why it matters

White often marks a preferred sector, but it is not a universal promise of safe water. Follow the charted bearings, notes, and pilotage directions.

Leading lights and line

Front and rear lights lie on the charted leading line. When approaching them, keeping the rear light vertically above the front light keeps the vessel on that line.

Why it matters

If the lights open, manoeuvre to close them again while checking the chart and surrounding traffic. Avoid a universal 'steer toward the upper light' mnemonic—it reverses with geometry and direction of travel.

Buoys & beacons

Floating and fixed marks, sound signals, and electronic aids (sections Q, R, S).

Conical buoy

A triangle standing on the small position circle is the paper-chart form of a conical buoy.

Why it matters

Body shape is only part of the mark. Confirm colour, topmark, light, and the applicable IALA region before deciding the safe side.

Can buoy

A rectangular body standing on the small position circle is the paper-chart form of a cylindrical or can buoy.

Why it matters

Confirm colour, topmark, light, and IALA region. Lateral colours reverse between Regions A and B even though the body shapes do not.

Spherical buoy

A circular body above the small position circle is the paper-chart form of a spherical buoy.

Why it matters

A spherical body alone does not fully identify the mark. Read its colours, topmark, light, and charted purpose.

Pillar buoy

A broad floating base with a tall narrow superstructure is the paper-chart form of a pillar buoy.

Why it matters

Pillar form is neutral: interpret the mark from its colour pattern, topmark, light, and charted function.

Spar buoy

A long narrow body leaning away from the small position circle is the paper-chart form of a spar or spindle buoy.

Why it matters

Spar form is neutral. Use the colour, topmark, light, and charted function to identify how to pass it.

Mooring buoy

The buoy body with a ring or mooring attachment identifies a permanent mooring. Imray uses a separate magenta visitor-mooring service symbol on large-scale plans.

Why it matters

Do not anchor close to moorings: chains, sinkers, and risers occupy more seabed than the surface buoy suggests.

Beacon with topmark

An upright fixed-mark line on a base, topped by the charted daymark, identifies a beacon with a topmark.

Why it matters

A beacon may stand on the hazard it marks. Identify its complete colour and topmark pattern before choosing the side to pass.

Beacon tower

A tapered tower form identifies a substantial masonry, concrete, or lattice beacon structure.

Why it matters

The tower may carry a light, colour pattern, or topmark. Use all charted information rather than the silhouette alone.

Direction of buoyage

The outlined arrow marks the conventional direction of buoyage where it might otherwise be unclear. Imray's Region A key places red port-hand marks and green starboard-hand marks in that direction.

Why it matters

Use the charted arrow, not the vessel's heading, to interpret lateral marks. In IALA Region B the lateral colours reverse, while the can/cone shapes do not.

Areas & limits

9 symbols

Boundaries, zones, cables, pipelines, and routes (sections N, M, L, D).

Anchorage point and anchorage area

A bare anchor identifies a reported or recommended anchorage point. A broken boundary with repeated anchor marks encloses a designated anchorage area.

Why it matters

A charted anchorage is not a weather guarantee. Check shelter, depth, bottom, swinging room, local allocation, and current restrictions.

Anchoring prohibited

A crossed anchor in magenta marks a prohibition on anchoring at a point or within a charted area.

Why it matters

The restriction may protect cables, pipelines, fairways, habitats, or security areas. Read the associated legend and local rules.

Restricted or prohibited area limit

A broken line with inward ticks bounds a restricted area. Colour and the accompanying legend distinguish restrictions from a complete prohibition on entry.

Why it matters

The line alone does not say what is forbidden. Read the charted legend, notes, and current local regulations.

Traffic separation scheme (TSS)

Outlined arrows show established traffic direction; the central band or line separates opposing lanes.

Why it matters

COLREG Rule 10 applies. Small craft crossing a lane should do so on a heading as nearly as practicable at right angles and must not impede lane traffic.

Submarine cable

A repeating magenta wave line traces the route of a submarine cable. A break or lightning mark can distinguish a submarine power cable.

Why it matters

Avoid anchoring or dragging gear nearby. If ground tackle fouls a suspected cable, do not attempt to haul the infrastructure aboard.

Submarine pipeline

A magenta line made from short segments and round dots traces a pipeline. A nearby label may identify oil, gas, water, or another service.

Why it matters

Avoid anchoring or dragging gear nearby. A pipeline may stand proud of the seabed even where the surrounding depth is ample.

Overhead power line and clearance

Pylon positions joined by a power-transmission line identify an overhead crossing. The chart distinguishes the physical height from any charted vertical clearance.

Why it matters

Compare the correct clearance datum with actual water level and the vessel's complete air draught, allowing for waves and vessel motion. High-voltage lines can arc before contact.

Ferry route

A magenta ferry line traces a regular route. Cable ferries are separately identified because their cable can span the crossing.

Why it matters

The route is a warning, not a grant of right-of-way. Apply the COLREGs, maintain a proper lookout, and never pass between a cable ferry and its landing.

Services & land

15 symbols

Bridges, landmarks, ports, and small-craft facilities (sections D, E, F, U).

Bridge vertical clearance

A bridge crossing is accompanied by the charted vertical clearance at the navigable opening, referred to the chart's stated height datum.

Why it matters

Compare the correct datum with actual water level and full air draught, allowing for waves, vessel motion, uncertainty, and local restrictions.

Opening bridge with vertical clearance

A plan-view bridge line broken at the navigable span identifies an opening bridge. The magenta overlined and underlined figure gives charted vertical clearance.

Why it matters

Confirm whether the figure applies with the bridge closed, plus the opening schedule, signals, height datum, water level, and full air draught.

Church

A church plan symbol, sometimes qualified by tower, spire, or cupola, identifies a charted church position.

Why it matters

Use the precise charted position and description rather than matching any vaguely similar skyline object.

Tower

A small tapered elevation drawing identifies a tower. Qualifying text distinguishes types such as a water tower.

Why it matters

Check the abbreviation and charted position before using the structure for a visual bearing.

Chimney

A narrow tapered stack, commonly accompanied by Chy, identifies an industrial chimney.

Why it matters

Aircraft obstruction lights on a chimney are not marine navigation lights. Use the charted position and description.

Tank

A circular plan symbol identifies a storage tank; several symbols may identify a tank group.

Why it matters

Use the charted position and any qualifier rather than assuming every visible cylindrical structure is the marked tank.

Radio or television mast

A tall mast elevation with radio arcs identifies a radio or television mast. A tower has a separate chart symbol.

Why it matters

Red aviation lights are not marine navigation lights. Take bearings from the charted position and confirm the structure description.

Yacht marina

A magenta circle containing a stylized yacht marks a marina on Imray large-scale charts and plans.

Why it matters

The symbol identifies the facility, not berth availability or approach depth. Check the plan, pilot book, and current marina information.

Visitors' moorings

The magenta visitors' moorings pictogram appears on Imray large-scale charts and harbour plans.

Why it matters

It indicates intended use, not guaranteed availability, suitability, or permission. Check local instructions and the mooring's limits.

Visitors' berths

Imray uses a circled V on large-scale plans to identify visitors' berths.

Why it matters

The mark does not guarantee a free berth. Contact the harbour or marina and follow berth-allocation instructions.

Public landing

The stair-step pictogram identifies a public place where people can land from small craft.

Why it matters

Tide, surge, local restrictions, and the condition of steps or pontoons still determine whether landing is safe.

Slipway for small craft

The tapered ramp pictogram marks a slipway intended for launching or recovering small craft.

Why it matters

The chart does not confirm gradient, surface, tidal access, fees, parking, or trailer suitability. Check current local details.

Water tap

A tap pictogram on an Imray harbour plan identifies a freshwater supply point.

Why it matters

Availability, hose fittings, opening hours, and whether the water is potable can change—verify locally.

Fuel

The fuel-pump pictogram identifies a harbour or marina fuel facility on Imray plans.

Why it matters

It does not guarantee fuel grade, depth alongside, hours, or current operation. Confirm before depending on it.

Harbour master

The magenta harbour-master symbol marks the office or contact point for harbour directions and local information.

Why it matters

Use current VHF, telephone, notices, or posted instructions; the office location alone does not state the reporting procedure.
