An asterisk marks a rock that shows at low water; an underlined figure gives its drying height.
What it means
The six-armed asterisk is a rock that covers and uncovers with the tide. Where known, its drying height above chart datum is shown beside it, underlined — here 1₂ (1.2 units).
Why it matters
Visible at low water, invisible and just awash near high water — the most treacherous state. Give charted asterisks a wide berth whenever the tide is above the rock's drying height.
