Rode and scope

The rode is everything connecting the boat to her anchor—rope, chain, or a combination. Scope is the ratio of rode paid out to the vertical distance from the bow roller to the seabed (water depth plus bow height), with 5:1 to 7:1 the usual planning range.

How it works

Scope exists because anchors hold when pulled horizontally along the seabed and break free when pulled upward. More rode flattens the angle of pull, letting the anchor dig in; chain adds weight whose sag—the catenary—absorbs snatching before it reaches the anchor. About 3:1 can serve a brief calm-weather stop, 5:1 is a moderate-conditions guide, and 7:1 is the rough-weather figure where swinging room allows.

Measure the vertical distance honestly: from the bow roller, not the water surface, and at the highest water expected during the stay. A rising tide quietly shrinks scope just as weather often builds, and every extra metre of rode also enlarges the circle the boat swings through—so scope planning and swing-room planning are the same conversation.

Why the angle matters

An anchor is a one-way device: it resists a pull along the bottom and surrenders to a pull from above—which is exactly how you recover it, hauling the rode vertical to break it out. Scope is the geometry that keeps the working pull as horizontal as possible, and the anchoring page’s calculator turns the same geometry into metres of rode for your depth, tide, and bow height.

On the water

  • In 4 m of water with a 1 m bow roller, a 5:1 scope means paying out about 25 m of rode.
  • A 2 m tidal rise turns the afternoon’s 5:1 into barely 4:1—veer more rode before the wind arrives.
  • Before a windy night, the crew veers toward 7:1 after checking that the bigger swing circle stays clear of neighbours.

Common mistake

Scope is not rode divided by water depth alone. Measure from the bow roller—depth plus bow height—at the highest water expected, or the anchor quietly loses scope exactly when wind and waves build.

Long and low makes the anchor hold: more SCOPE, more horizontal pull.
