Rapid bell forward for 5 seconds, then rapid gong aft for 5 seconds, every minute — large vessels at anchor mark both ends.
You hear: rapid ringing of the bell for about 5 seconds, then rapid sounding of the gong for about 5 seconds.
Meaning
“In a vessel of 100 meters or more in length the bell shall be sounded in the forepart of the vessel and immediately after the ringing of the bell the gong shall be sounded rapidly for about 5 seconds in the after part of the vessel.” Hearing bell then gong tells you both the vessel's presence and roughly how she lies.
