Sound signals

Rules 32–37 define whistle blasts, maneuvering and warning signals, fog signals, and distress signals — covered signal by signal in the Sounds topic.

In plain language

Part D is the language of the whistle: a short blast lasts about one second, a prolonged blast four to six. Rule 34 covers maneuvering and warning signals between vessels in sight; Rule 35 covers fog signals when you cannot see each other; Rule 36 attracting attention and Rule 37 distress. The biggest exam trap lives here: International whistle signals announce an action you are taking, while Inland signals state an intention that the other vessel must agree to.
