Anchoring cockpit checklist
Planning, scope, setting, load transfer, anchor watch, and a dragging-anchor response.
A repeatable anchoring workflow
1. Choose and calculate
Check charted hazards, cables, prohibited or sensitive areas, forecast, tide, bottom, depth, escape route, and other boats. Calculate rode and swing before committing.
2. Approach under control
Brief the crew and agree clear hand signals. Approach slowly into the stronger effect of wind or current and stop over the chosen drop point with the boat nearly stationary.
3. Lower—never throw
Lower the anchor to the bottom, then ease rode as the boat falls back so it lays out rather than piling on top of the anchor. Keep feet, hands, and clothing out of coils, bights, and the windlass.
4. Set progressively
At the planned scope, take the load and increase reverse power in stages. A steady, rising load and fixed transits support a good set; hopping, vibration, or continued movement suggest dragging.
5. Transfer the load
Secure rope rode to a suitable cleat, or fit a chain stopper and snubber or bridle so the windlass is not left carrying the boat. Protect rope from chafe and confirm the bitter end is secure.
6. Record and keep watching
Record the drop position, depth, rode, weather, and nearby hazards. Set an anchor alarm, take visual or radar bearings, and reassess after tide turns or any wind, swell, or neighbour change.
Scope and swing planner
Rode = (depth now + additional rise + bow height) × ratio. The swing estimate adds boat length beyond the bow and assumes a full circle. These are geometry aids, not universal prescriptions: use the anchor and vessel maker’s limits, local guidance, bottom, forecast, waves, rode type, and available room. Do not add the total tide height again if your depth input already includes it.
Anchor watch: use more than one clue
Transits and bearings
Choose two fixed objects in line or take bearings on separated landmarks. Recheck them after the set and through the tide. A steadily changing bearing in the same direction is more suspicious than normal swinging.
Set the alarm from the drop point
If possible, mark where the anchor—not the GPS antenna—was dropped. Set a radius that includes expected swing, boat length, and GPS error but still warns before a hazard. Keep the alarm audible and the device powered.
Expect reversals
A tide turn or wind shift can pull from a new direction, reduce scope as water rises, foul the rode, or make neighbours swing differently. Recheck before the change, not only after it wakes you.
Signs of dragging
Fixed objects march across each other, the GPS track escapes its normal arc, depth changes unexpectedly, or the rode alternately snatches and vibrates as the anchor skips. Treat doubt early while sea room remains.
If the anchor may be dragging
1. Call the skipper and start the response
Wake or alert crew, start the engine if safe, establish position and hazards, post a lookout, and put personal flotation equipment on as conditions require.
2. Confirm without delaying
Check several cues—transits, position track, depth, and rode feel. Ease additional rode only if it will improve holding without putting the boat or neighbours in danger.
3. Abort a bad anchorage
If holding is doubtful, relieve the load with the engine, recover the anchor without driving over the rode, and move to a safer drop point or leave. Do not keep repeating a failed set in shrinking sea room.
4. Protect the boat and people first
If the anchor cannot be recovered in time, use the planned emergency release, buoy the rode if practicable, warn nearby traffic, and make the appropriate urgency or distress call when the situation warrants it.
